WW1
From 1914 to 1918, the world’s greatest powers engaged in what is known as World War 1. WW1 is also referred to as the First World War, the Great War and the war to end all wars.
This war got its start on June 28 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. The assignation was carried out by a Yugoslav nationalist and as a result, the Habsburg ultimatum was issued against of the Kingdom of Serbia. Within weeks of this event, the major powers of the world at this time were at war.
Germany’s invasion of Belgium, Luxembourg and France officially started out the armed hostilities along with the Austro-Hungarian invasion of Serbia and a Russian attack on Prussia.
Eventually the battle came to a stalemate in what was known as the Western Front and turned into a war of attrition. The Western Front was a waste land riddled with trenches that went on forever. It was a brutal killing field that showcased machine guns and gas.

Finally, on November 11, 1918 Germany surrendered on what is now known as Armistice Day.
The Great War at the time was a huge leap ahead in modern warfare with the introduction of the air craft used for fighting. The Red Baron became known as the wars greatest fighting ace and in fact after his death, the opposing forces actually flew the missing man formation for him out of their respect for his great flying prowess.
