During the Great War, many brave soldiers on both sides of the conflict won medals. If they were lucky, the received the while they were still alive and the unlucky brave souls who received them did so posthumously.

World War 1 medals were issued with a service number, rank, name and regiment. This is how you can tell a genuine WW1 medal because they all will have those details.

The four main medals there issued were the 1914 Star, 1914-15 Star, Victory Medal and the British War Medal. Of course, there were many more types of medals issued but this group of 4 comprised most of them.
