During the early stages of WW1, many of the wounds by soldiers were head wounds because believe it or not, none of the military forces on either sided issued helmets and they all wore either cloth or leather caps which offered no protection from bullets or shrapnel.
It was quickly realized that helmets could save a soldiers life and cut down on casualties so each side started to develop their own helmets to issue to their soldiers.
The French army introduced the first modern steel helmets in 1915 and they were bowl shaped. These early helmets were soon replaced with the Adrian helmet.
The German army issued their first modern steel helmet called the Stahlhelm and was actually referred to as the model 1916. After steel helmets were issued, head wounds on both sides of the war dropped drastically.
